El Gordito is a project from Scottish winemaker Pamela Geddes who works at the co-op in Mara. For El Gordito she is able to select fruit from the best vineyards in Calatayud and it is the product of bush vine dry grown Garnacha from a small parcel that was planted in 1937 and of Shiraz that was planted in trellis with drip irrigation in 2002.
The wine itself is really nicely balanced between a rich, opulent fruitiness and a dryness which makes it very good with food. The 2005 was the first vintage and it won a Silver Medal at the IWC.
Pamela forged her reputation with Spain's only sparkling red wine, La Pamelita, inspired by her formative years in Australia making sparkling Shiraz. This unusual wine is a real treat for the senses, with an opulent rich fruit flavour lifted by the gentle bubbles. La Rosita is the latest addition to the stable and is a sparkling Rosé of great finesse and a sense of fun. Both wines are made from grapes from DO Calatayud.
